Shopping Local

Christmas markets are the shortcut to buying local: fifty-odd small businesses in one room, for an hour of your morning, instead of tracking them down one at a time online.

What a vendor market actually is

A vendor market is a room full of independent sellers who each rent a booth for the day. Nobody is a franchise or a concession — the person behind the table usually made, baked or hand-picked what is on it.

That is the difference worth caring about. Your money goes to a household rather than a distribution centre, and you can ask how something was made and get a real answer.

It also solves the hardest gifts. The person who has everything is much easier to buy for when the options are one-off and local rather than whatever is stacked by the entrance at a big-box store.

What you'll find

  • Handmade and craft

Woodwork, ceramics, textiles, leather — made by the person at the table.

  • Boutique clothing

Women's and children's pieces you won't find in a mall.

  • Jewellery

    Handmade, permanent and custom.

  • Home and holiday decor

Wreaths, ornaments, signage and seasonal pieces.

  • Candles, bath and body

Small-batch soaps, scrubs, balms and candles.

  • Personalised gifts

    Engraving, monogramming and made-to-order.

  • Packaged food and sweets

Baked goods, jams, seasonings and gift boxes.

Doing it in a morning

  • • Go early. First hour, full tables, room to actually look.
  • • Walk the whole room once before buying anything.
  • • Take cash as well as a card — smaller makers are faster with it.
  • • Bring a tote; you will buy more than you planned to.
  • • Ask who made it. That is the entire point of shopping this way.

Shopping local, answered

What is a vendor market?

A room of independent sellers who each rent a booth for the day. Nobody is a chain or a concession — the person behind the table usually made, baked or hand-picked what is on it.

Is shopping at a Christmas market more expensive than a store?

Item for item it can be, because you are buying small-batch rather than mass-produced. What you are paying for is something nobody else will have given the same person, and the money going to a household rather than a distribution centre.

Do vendors take card or do I need cash?

Most take cards and phone payments, but each vendor runs their own checkout. Bring some cash for the smaller makers — and note nobody at the market can make change for you.

When do Houston-area Christmas markets start?

Most run from early November to just before Christmas, with the busiest weekends in mid-November. Earlier markets are worth catching while vendors still have full stock of anything one-off.

How much time should I set aside?

An hour to walk a small market properly, two or three if you want to talk to people. Large markets are a half-day at minimum.
